ADE Wins 2019 Dream Design for Splashaway Bay at Perfect Day at CocoCay
As part of its annual Dream Designs competition, the trade publication Aquatics International recognized the work of Aquatic Design & Engineering (ADE) for Splashaway Bay at Royal Caribbean’s Perfect Day at CocoCay.
Once again, ADE is in the spotlight for its creative design of the kids aquatic playground on Perfect Day at CocoCay. This playground takes the whimsy and fun from the other ADE-designed Splashaway Bays that are found onboard Royal Caribbean ships and multiplies it to a grander scale. Surrounded by spraying water features, the large play structure with a connecting bridge is topped by two giant dumping buckets, ensuring that every kid (and even kids-at-heart) will get soaked. Five pint-sized slides anchor the end of the playground and empty into a two-foot-deep wading pool.
The magazine cited important reasons for Splashaway Bay earning a Dream Design award—and ones that we as aquatic designers always take into consideration when we develop an interactive water feature: safety and creativity. One purpose of designing the elevated play structure was to create sight lines for parents and lifeguards, allowing them to see underneath the bridges and steps to the other areas of the playground. We also incorporated the highest standards of safety into the flooring of Splashaway Bay. By using the slip-resistant Life Floor tiles, we could ensure a soft and safe environment, while also giving us the creativity to include fun and vibrant floor patterns. The blues, teals, and yellows brighten the entire aquatic playground, and the seashells, starfish, and other ocean designs bring out the island vibes found all over Perfect Day at CocoCay.
